Do you love tv series, films, animations, comics and graphic novels? Do you have character ideas that you want to bring to life? In this Character Design class, instructor, Anu Annam teaches students how to illustrate typically the most compelling part of their stories—their characters. The instructor takes into account the students’ drawing style and concept and teaches them to enhance and perfect it. This comprehensive workshop begins with a writing exercise, then a concept sketch, then a final fully developed character model after group and individual instruction. The curriculum includes figure and portrait lessons, color theory, perspective, and modeling—a key step in creating a repeated, consistent character. There will be demonstrations of these principles as well as a review on how to use various materials. Principles of design are also stressed. This will be framed in the context of visual storytelling which is unique to the comic and graphic novel medium as well as film and television storyboarding.
This workshop is open to all ages, skill levels, and is inclusive of typically developing and special needs students. All students need to follow along at home is some paper, a sharp pencil/eraser, and a black pen if they have it. Anything to color is just fine. I will provide supplemental material to download and/or print out so students can go more in-depth at their own pace.
