This workshop is suitable for ages 10 and up.

Draw your own character through wild experimentation of form, proportion, and color through exaggerating, minimizing and all out eliminating major features or colors with fun exercises that help you focus on how you feel* about subjects, more than what they are supposed to look like. I will help you find conventional proportions if you need them, and then throw them out of wack to express your own aesthetic, the way Tim Burton does in his incredible stop-motion film, “Nightmare before Christmas”.
Love the ghoulish, cuddly goth aesthetic of the world Tim Burton creates in this film? We can explore the twisted, gnarly, and bulbous shapes and black and grey values, and violet and orange hues that bathe his characters and scenes. Want to express the Christmas Jack Skellington, the lead character dreams of, we will choose the palette for that world.
We will create palettes and styles for what you need. I will have worksheets provided to help build your character and world available prior to the class so that the character you come up with is filled with personality, history, and motives that can engage your viewer. Upon registration, you can request these sheets, or, I will give you some time in class to fill them.
The last hour, we will focus on your final drawing. Bring your favorite art supplies and I will work with you individually to make a character you can be proud of and possibly use as a basis for professional work.
