Finding Beauty in the Mundane Virtual Workshop

November 17, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

This workshop will be held through ZOOM.

November 17, 6:00-8:00pm

Price: $10

The ZOOM link will be sent out 1 week before the start of the class.

Course Information

The job of the artist is not only to copy what he or she sees. As important technical execution is, the next step to art making, is putting emotion into what is being created. This course will challenge the student to look at the world around them in a very different way. Using both black and white, and color media of the students choice, the student will be asked to visually elevate items that they may overlook in their daily lives, and inject emotion into what they are creating.

Course Content

Class will begin with a drawing warm of 1-2 min sketches of still lifes followed by 1 5min blind contour. Then there will be a short talk about the philosophy of finding beauty in the boring, mundane etc. with historical examples and references (particularly from the last 200 yrs). Students will be asked to draw an everyday object(s) using various drawing techniques to bring out the underlying interest of that object. Finally, students will be asked to complete another full color drawing or painting (students discretion) where they will be asked to express, not only an object, but how they feel (about the object, what the object might mean to them, or how they feel at the moment). Class will culminate with a small critique.

Teaching Philosophy

I have a fluid teaching philosophy. I believe that every student has their own unique way of learning, and therefore, their own set of needs and strengths that they bring to me. I try to adjust what I am teaching to meet every student’s needs so the class as a whole will be more successful.
