SUMMARY:Westbury Arts' Fifth Annual Virtual Poetry Slam 2025
DESCRIPTION:The ZOOM link for the Poetry Slam will be sent by email to all who register prior to the day of the event. \nFriday\, January 17\, 2024 \n7:00 – 9:00 pm \nCALLING ALL POETS! Westbury Arts is proud to host a fifth annual virtual Poetry Slam this January! The event\, which will be held live via Zoom\, will give poets hailing from Long Island\, NYC\, and elsewhere a chance to read their work live\, talk about their inspirations\, and answer questions about their poetry from the event’s host and audience (who can leave comments via the chat feature). All poetry styles are welcome such as haiku\, sonnets\, free verse and so on. The subject matter of the poems can range in tone and topic. However\, since this is an event that is intended for all audiences\, no poems will feature excessive foul language\, substantial violence\, or graphic sexual content. The poetry reading event will be recorded and subsequently uploaded to YouTube for the public to enjoy long after the event. DESCRIPTION:“To The Editor” are three words that are quick and easy to write. But actually getting a letter accepted for publication can be a whole other matter. Join us for a conversation with two experts on the matter: Chuck Cutolo ’73 and Richie Kavesh ’73 have\, between them\, had dozens of letters to the editor printed over the years in The New York Times\, The Washington Post\, Newsday \, and other publications. They will be sharing their experiences of what makes it more likely that a proposed letter will stand out to an editor amidst the hundreds\, if not thousands\, of submissions. Joining the discussion and adding her insights from “the other side of the desk” will be Susan Mermelstein\, who has recently retired from The New York Times\, where she worked for more than 30 years\, including 15 as a senior staff editor handling letters to the editor. SUMMARY:Looking Under the Hood of the Writing Process
DESCRIPTION:Looking Under The Hood Of The Writing Process \nFor the past several years Westbury Arts has presented Westbury’s Got Talent\, an open-mic showcase that allows artists ranging from singers\, poets\, comedians\, and performers of the spoken word to share with the community their gifts for communication in its various forms.  Looking Under The Hood of The Writing Process\, on June 29 from 2:00PM to 3:30PM\, will ask\, and answer\, the process questions of “how\,” “why\,” and “what” these writers did to bring their ideas from their minds\, through their fingers\, and onto the page and stage.  It will also give the audience a taste from the presenters’ finished products.  The panelists for the program are Julie Lyon (President of the Board of Directors of Westbury Arts and a singer/songwriter); Alicia Evans (former Vice-President of the Board of Directors of Westbury Arts and an author of fiction and non-fiction works)\, Keith McNair (a member of the Poetry Society of New York whose topic areas include life’s celebrations and social issues); and Chuck Cutolo (a member of the Westbury Arts Board of Directors and a self-described poetic essayist.)  Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions as they themselves consider whether being part of what’s under the hood of the writing process is someplace they’d like to be\, too. \n  \nWestbury Arts programs are made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the governor and the New York State Legislature.

Producer Doug LeClaire brings the World’s Best Short Films back to Westbury to present the 14th Annual Westbury Short Film Concert. The first film blasts on to the screen at 8:00 PM. This eclectic screening of independently produced short films is recommended for ages 16 and way above. \nAsbury Shorts combines classic shorts with new global honorees creating a rare opportunity to see world-class films on a real cinema screen rather than YouTube\, computers or smart phones. The September 5th lineup will feature a mix of U.S. festival “Best of Show” winners and international hits with many audience favorites from over the years.
