SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Village of Westbury 90th Anniversary Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Westbury Arts\, in collaboration with the Westbury Historical Society\, is marking the Village’s 90th anniversary this year with an exhibition of photos and other artifacts of historical interest. \nPerhaps no other community in Nassau County has seen in 90 years as much rapid change as Westbury. From an agrarian Quaker community of dairy farms and potato fields adjacent to the Hempstead Plains\, Westbury evolved into a suburban community bordering the Gold Coast. Then\, this lifestyle was disrupted by World War II and the construction of the Northern State Parkway. This may have spelled doom\, but Westbury has weathered many rebirths\, and today its demographic change and downtown revitalization continue to rejuvenate our community. \nJoin us at Westbury Arts\, 255 Schenck Ave.\, for the official opening reception of the Village of Westbury’s 90th Anniversary Exhibition on Saturday\, November 5\, 2022\, from 7-9 pm. Register for free on Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Hispanic Heritage Month Event: "Undocumented" Doc
DESCRIPTION:Critics have said\, “Possibly the most important film at the present time\,” and\, “Absolutely sensational! Everyone should see this!” \n\n\nAbout this event \n\n\n\nPatricia Shih’s first film is about a young teen who fled to America from Colombia to join his parents from whom he had been separated for years. A story of loss\, struggle\, fear\, and ultimately triumph as the boy achieves valedictorian\, then is accepted to Princeton where his undocumented status gets revealed\, and finally Harvard Medical School. He is now a top cardiac surgeon on Long Island. His story is compelling\, inspiring\, heart-wrenching. \nA Q & A follows with the filmmakers and subject\, Dr. Harold Fernandez\, who will sell and sign copies of his books. 100% of all book sales goes to the Dreamer movement. Ms. Shih will be selling and signing DVDs of the film. \n\n\n\n\n“Dr. Fernandez’s story is emblematic of so many immigrant families seeking an opportunity to live safely\, and striving to reach their full potential. The film conveys the love and determination that propelled them to follow their dream. This film needs to be seen far and wide. It has the power to touch hearts and change minds to be more open to different people.” \n\n\n  \nDr. Harold Fernandez\, Heart Surgeon and Author \nHarold Fernandez is a leading heart surgeon in New York. He is a professor of cardiothoracic surgery for the Northwell-Hofstra School of Medicine\, and the system director of surgical heart failure for Northwell Health. He completed his college education at Princeton\, and medical training at Harvard and MIT\, followed by residency and fellowship training at NYU Medical Center. He has been ranked as one of the top heart surgeons in NY State by the Department of Health annual statistics. He is the author of two books: Undocumented and A Boy and a Book. He is passionate about immigrants’ rights\, healing through whole-food\, plant-based nutrition and exercise\, and the power of reading and an education to make your dreams a reality. He currently resides in Huntington\, New York\, with his wife\, Sandra\, his daughter\, Jasmine\, and his son\, Brandon. \n\n\n\n  \n\nPatricia Shih\, Multidisciplinary Artist \nPatricia Shih has been a creative artist in multiple media her entire life\, starting at the age of 4 when she won her first art award. At age 15\, she signed a recording contract in Washington\, D.C.\, and at 16\, Unicorn Records released her first recording. Since then she has made her full-time living in the visual and performing arts\, including music and theatre\, and most recently in video and filmmaking. Her artistic strengths and creative sensibilities\, storytelling experience\, and music shine in her music videos and now documentaries. Her first film\, “Undocumented\,” has been accepted by 13 national and international film festivals to date\, winning 16 prizes and honors. \nPatricia earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from The Academy of Art and Lone Mountain College in San Francisco. SUMMARY:The Arts of Islam: Ritual\, Beauty\, Pattern
DESCRIPTION:About this event\nThis Exhibition\, “The Art of Islam: Ritual\, Beauty\, Pattern” is a collaboration between Westbury Arts and the Islamic Center of Long Island. \nCurated by a group from the Islamic Center of Long Island in Westbury\, it illustrates the stylistic\, cultural\, and historical breadth of Islamic art. The work on display\, coming from home collections of local Muslim families and the works of modern Muslim artists\, employs various art forms\, such as calligraphy\, paintings\, pottery\, and metal works. Included on display will be the hand-carved ivory replica of the Taj Mahal (seen above) which is only 12 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches. \nThe exhibition groups these pieces according to three unifying characteristics of Islamic art: ritual\, beauty\, and pattern. Traditional Islamic art emphasizes the teachings of the Quran (ritual)\, the exquisiteness of the world crafted by a loving Creator (beauty)\, and repetitive\, all-over surface decoration (pattern) suggesting the infinite. Says Dr. Faroque Khan of Jericho\, co-chair of the art exhibition committee\, “Just as the religion of Islam embodies a way of daily living\, this collection helps to illustrate concepts that have unified Muslims through time\, space\, and mode of artistic expression.” \nWestbury Arts is proud to partner with the Islamic Center. Our President\, Julie Lyon has said that “Our hope is that this exhibition will allow all who visit to enjoy the art while broadening their understanding of Islamic culture.” \nIn addition to our opening reception\, gallery viewing will be available on: \nFridays\, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM\, on August 12th\, 19th\, and 26th. \nSaturdays\, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM on August 13th\, 20th and 27th. \nSundays\, from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM\, on August 7th\, 14th\, and 21st. \nOpening Reception for the Exhibition \n\nREGISTER

Poetry from a gender perspective analyzes the experience of living in two borders\, reflecting on humanity and its relationship with the environment. A deep heartfelt discussion on her native country\, the American Dream\, and the daily struggles of women inside and outside the United States. Henao uses the power of poetry to describe her version of her native country and the violence exercised against the largest population in the country: the peasant and indigenous people. \nThe paintings and art on view\, along with the dialogue will help us explore the many issues that women still face in today’s society\, whether in a Latin American country or the United States. \nAdditional viewing available during gallery viewing hours: \nFridays: March 11\, 18\, and 25\, 2022 from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM\nSaturdays: March 12\, 19\, and 26\, 2022 from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM\nMasks and current CDC recommendations are expected to be followed. \nUna lectura de poesía bilingüe con la artista y autora Rosalba Henao.
