You will then do some practice exercises and begin working on watercolor paper with pencil\, and then a final ink application. Jay will supply reference photos for students to choose from. The first session of this class is not a prerequisite and beginners are welcome. \nOnce the inkwork is complete\, Jay will show the students watercolor materials and techniques. You will do a few practice samples and then add watercolors to your final ink piece. DESCRIPTION:The ZOOM link for the Poetry Slam will be sent by email to all who register prior to the day of the event. \nFriday\, January 17\, 2024 \n7:00 – 9:00 pm \nCALLING ALL POETS! Westbury Arts is proud to host a fifth annual virtual Poetry Slam this January! The event\, which will be held live via Zoom\, will give poets hailing from Long Island\, NYC\, and elsewhere a chance to read their work live\, talk about their inspirations\, and answer questions about their poetry from the event’s host and audience (who can leave comments via the chat feature). All poetry styles are welcome such as haiku\, sonnets\, free verse and so on. The subject matter of the poems can range in tone and topic. However\, since this is an event that is intended for all audiences\, no poems will feature excessive foul language\, substantial violence\, or graphic sexual content. DESCRIPTION:Once again\, we’re turning Westbury Arts’ gallery into a NYC style jazz club. For this\, our second endeavor\, we bring you The Chris Forbes Trio following the September 13\, 2024 release of his latest Unseen Rain recording Semjase. Pianist Chris Forbes is joined by Dmitry Ishenko on double bass and Tom Cabrera on drums. This ensemble will bring to Westbury Arts a heady mix of jazz standards\, original compositions and freely improvised jazz that promises to offer both white hot creativity and stone cold grooves. SUMMARY:Latinx in the Broadway Musical\, presented by Marc Courtade
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: The Latinx image in the Broadway Musical has changed from stereotypical stars and roles to a fully integrated view of the American experience. The traditional Broadway Musical was the domain of Jewish male composers\, lyricists and book writers. The Black experience was finally explored by Black creators in the 1970’s\, but it took until In the Heights in 2008 for a musical about Latinos written by a Latinx creative team to reach Broadway. Early on\, musicals used Latinx performers stereotypically for ethnic color. With the emergence of Chita Rivera\, the talent and the background were no longer mutually exclusive. With the arrival of In the Heights\, the Latinx creators infuse the traditional format of a musical with Latinx music\, and turn a storyline ostensibly about Latinx into another view of the American experience. \n  \n \nABOUT THE SPEAKER: Marc Courtade is a retired arts administrator with over 30 years experience in leadership roles. He continues as a frequent speaker all over Long Island and the New York area on Broadway Musicals\, Opera\, and Great Performers. Marc teaches courses on Opera and Broadway Musicals for the Frick Estate Lectures at Nassau County Museum of Art\, and has led Reading & Discussion programs for NY Humanities\, focusing on race relations in classic musicals and their literary source materials. Producer Doug LeClaire brings the World’s Best Short Films back to Westbury to present the 12th Annual Westbury Short Film Concert. The first film blasts on to the screen at 8:00 PM.
