This event will be hosted through ZOOM. The link will be sent out the day of the event.
Imprimatura (imprimitura) is an old master technique that means “first paint layer”. In this workshop we will paint a small portrait using this technique in oils.
This will be a step by step instructional workshop that will result in a finished or nearly finished portrait, and working knowledge of a classic fine art painting technique.
Working with the contrast in our reference images, we will use the imprimatura technique to recreate our chosen portrait in earth tones.
We will also learn how to enlarge our images with a simple graph. You do not need to have any serious prior knowledge of painting in oils to take this class. It is suitable for anyone who has wanted to explore oil painting as well as anyone who wants to learn a new technique.
I will provide a portrait in black and white for reference or you may use your own. Be sure to print out your image to make it easier to enlarge.
You can purchase starter sets of oil paints and brushes which may be more affordable than buying individual brushes and tubes of paint.
You can also use acrylic brushes for oil paint, however you may not be able to use them for acrylic again, once you’ve used them for oil paints.
Painting in oils can be intimidating but this technique is very forgiving and easy to learn. It’s also a technique that works for charcoal drawings and acrylic painting.
