Join us for the first event in our Be the Color of This World series, our Fifth Anniversary Black History Month Jubilee Celebration! Filled with music, poetry, storytelling, dance, and cultural reflection!

African American Culture: Connecting the Community Through the Arts, offers a rich tapestry of live and video performances in storytelling, dance, song, poetry, artistic expression and cultural reflection!


About this event: 

Art Exhibition Opening Reception on Friday, February 4th 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. will showcase provocative works by Dr. Nichelle Rivers of NiRI Art who passionately declares Art moves me. Art inspires me. Art challenges me. Art heals me. and other local African American visual artists who will render their interpretations of the theme – Creative Visions of ‘Community and Cultural Reflections’, depicting a wide variety of artistic expression.  Artists will also discuss their works in a compelling panel interview not to be missed.   

Friday night’s  Art Exhibition Opening Reception will also feature a tribute to the late Joysetta Pearse, former director of the recently re-named Joysetta and Julius Pearse African American Museum of Nassau County delivered by Educator, Artist and Storyteller, Alica Evans as well as a  Tribute Poetry Reading by Deirdre Amukowa. There will be a video storytelling performance reflecting on the life of James A. Porter, the first African American art historian as told by Gwen Marable, a collateral descendant of Benjamin Banneker and member of the Griots’ Circle of Maryland and National Association of Black Storytellers. Ms. Marable will draw upon her experiences and research growing up in segregated Cincinnati in the 30s and 40s and has said “And I might even sign a little bit, if the mood hits me.”
