Call for Artists: I Sing the Body Electric: Inspired by the Written Word

All amateur and professional artists 18 and older working in any media are invited to enter works inspired by the written word. Choose any written work and translate it into something visual. Eligibility

Open to all artists 18 years of age and older, both amateur and professional. All media accepted. This year’s exhibition it titled –I Sing the Body Electric: Inspired by the Written Word. Work must not have been created more than three years prior to deadline and must not have been previously exhibited at the Long Island Museum. LIM employees and their immediate families/household members are not eligible to enter.

Awards

Cash prizes will be awarded for 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place and honorable mention.

Exhibition

Finalist selections will be on display in the exhibition space in the Visitors Center from May 3 –July 7, 2019. The first place winner will be prominently displayed in the museum from July 11 through July 21st.

Limitations

Up to three entries per person may be submitted. The maximum ready to hang size (including frame) is 36” in all directions. No exceptions. There is no minimum size requirement. If work is a film clip, a maximum length of 3 mins is allowed; there is no minimum length requirement. All works must be ready to hang, and all hanging wire and hardware must be provided. Three-dimensional pieces cannot be larger than 36” in any one direction and pedestals (if needed) must be provided. If work is a film, artist must provide all equipment to play film. Name and contact information must be on the reverse of all pieces.

Submission Guidelines

Images of all entries must be submitted electronically through the form on the Long Island Museum’s website, Longislandmuseum.org, by March 15, 2019. Entry fee must be paid or postmarked no later than March 15 as well. Send one image for each work in accordance with the digital entry guidelines below. Please submit best image quality, as it will represent your work and will be used to determine potential selection. Actual artwork will not be accepted at this time.

Digital Image Guidelines

All digital images must meet the following specifications: Must include File Name = artist’s last name, title, and match entry information as noted on the electronic entry form (i.e. JonesMyDog1.jpg, JonesSunflower2.jpg, etc.). The image files should be in JPG format, image resolution should be 72dpi and no larger than 2000 pixels in any direction. Images must be oriented properly (i.e. top of image is top of artwork) and be readable on a Windows based PC computer.

Fees

There is a non-refundable entry fee of $25 for Long Island Museum/LIMarts members, $30 for non-members, for up to three entries. Entry fee must be paid or postmarked no later than March 15. Please make check payable to The Long Island Museum, and mail to:

Please include artist name and contact information with your payment. Submission is complete upon receipt of payment. Confirmation emails will be sent when payment, images and online entry form are all complete and processed.

Delivery instructions for Selected Artwork

Artists whose work has been selected for the show will be notified by telephone or e-mail by March 28, 2019. Artwork may hand-delivered or shipped to The Long Island Museum, 1200 Route 25A, Stony Brook, NY 11790.

Hand-delivered entries may be dropped off only on the following dates & times at the Visitor’s Center:

  • Tuesday, April 16, noon – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, April 17, noon – 5:30 p.m.

Shipped entries must be received by April 12, 2019. Mailed entries must be postmarked on or before deadline. Please package artwork in reusable containers and enclose:

  • Prepaid return shipping label via US Mail, UPS, or FedEx must be complete and included when artwork arrives.
  • Artist name and contact information attached to the back of artwork.
  • The Long Island Museum is not responsible for lost or damaged artwork.

Pick-Up Instructions for Selected Art

Except for first place winner, all hand-delivered artwork must be picked up on the following dates and times at The Long Island Museum:

  • Tuesday, July 9, noon – 5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, July 10, noon – 5:30 p.m.

A storage fee of $5 per piece per day will be charged for pieces not picked up on the appointed day and artwork will be stored at the Museum at the owner’s risk. Any artwork not picked up after 30 days will become the property of The Long Island Museum. Arrangement for pickup of works by the first place artist will be made after July 22, 2019.

Awards Reception

An Awards Reception will be held on Friday, May 3, 2019 in the Visitors Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cash prizes and ribbons will be awarded to the winners. The public is invited to attend to view the winning pieces, as well as to meet the artists.
