4 Ways to Get Inexpensive NYC Theater Tickets

posted in: News 0

It’s no surprise that New York City is the hub for theater – but what may surprise you, your credit card after buying tickets. New York is home to some of the classics, like Les Miserables, Cats, Wicked and Phantom of the Opera, but all too many times it seems like tickets are way out of reach. Fortunately, you don’t need to spend a small fortune to get great seats to these shows, all you need to know is where to look. If your planning on going into the city for a Broadway show this winter, make sure you know the best ways to find inexpensive tickets.

Go Off Broadway

Any show you see in NYC is probably going to be amazing, so venture out of the typical box office shows and check out some of the smaller ones around town. Because they are not technically a “Broadway show” the tickets are much cheaper.

TKTS

Located in Time Square, on 1564 Broadway, New York, NY 10036, the TKTS booth is home to some seriously discounted tickets. Whether it’s on or off Broadway, TKTS is bound to have great tickets at a fraction of the theater asking price.

Go to the right websites

If you don’t feel like standing on line at TKTS, the right websites can also offer similarly discounted tickets. BroadwayBox.com and BroadwayInsider.com are great sites that offer as much as 60% off show tickets. There are even entire apps designated for finding cheap theater tickets, like the TodayTix App, which tells you where the cheapest tickets are, either online or posted on TKTS.

Play the lottery

And no, we don’t mean the Powerball (though you could play the Powerball, win millions and then get tickets to any show of your choice), but we mean the theater lottery. For most shows, you can go to the theater’s box office right when it opens on the day of the performance and ask if there are any tickets available. Other productions let you enter a lottery online and will email you if your name was picked.

If you’re still concerned about the cost or just don’t feel like traveling into the city on these cold winter nights, check out the hundreds of plays colleges on Long Island (and in Westbury!) put on every year. The Westbury Arts Council is dedicated to bringing art and culture to Long Island, and celebrating diversity and expression through art.
